Incidents

Concern was raised by parents of a lone male walker when they couldn't contact him. We let a little time pass, until he moved in to an area with phone signal and contact was established and we stood down

A woman sustained a nasty cut to her shin in a fall. Bystanders managed to stop the bleeding and we evacuated her

A woman sustained a suspected ankle fracture. She was treated by the team and evacuated by stretcher

A 75-year-old female slipped and fell, sustaining cuts to his head. She was treated by team members, evacuated to a car and taken to hospital by friends

A solo male suffered an open lower leg fracture while descending. He was treated and evacuated to an abmulance

A woman collapsed, unwell while walking. She was treated by the team and evacuated

Concern for welfare of male solo camping in the Lakes. Reported as in some difficulty on Wansfell but eventually located cold and wet in Keswick, where Keswick MRT took care of him

Four young males called for help when they became overwhelmed by weather conditions while attempting to camp on Crinkle Crags. They were located and escorted off by team members.

The team were alerted by Patterdale MRT, who had initially received a call by Cumbria Police, to two campers at Angle Tarn. On deeper investigation it was discovered that the campers were, in fact, at Angle Tarn in Great Langdale. The job was then handed over to LAMRT. Team members were dispatched to assist with taking down their tents and walking them back down safely to the valley floor.

We were made aware of a walker who had got lost in the bad weather, they initially pitched their tent in an attempt to wait out the bad weather and descend in the morning. However, the tent began to leak so they requested our assistance. After a conversation on the phone with members of our team the walker was able to successfully navigate off the hill and was monitored remotely back to their vehicle.

We received a report from CUMPOL that two walkers were lost in the vicinity of Ore gap after low cloud had caused them to lose their way. The team made their way up and made contact with the lost walkers, who were not aware where they had parked. After looking through photos they had taken throughout their day the team were able to decipher where the walkers had parked and provided them with assistance back to the valley floor and then drove them to their vehicles.

NWAS requested assistance with evacuating a casualty on Windermere lake shore.

We were made aware of a high risk missing person in the Grasmere area. Police requested a limited search of key areas. The missing person was located, sadly deceased, in small quarry, by team drone operators. He was removed to Ambleside

We were requested by NWAS to attend a woman with a shoulder injury at Galava Fort in Ambleside. Investigation revealed that the casualty had self-rescued.

We were requested to assist a male with an ankle injury. Upon investigation they were able to make their own way off.

A male sustained an suspected fracture/dislocation of the ankle on steep ground near The Bad Step. He was treated and moved to more accessible ground and then evacuated by Coastguard helicopter

A male was taken ill with significantly raised pulse. He was treated and evacuated

A woman fell while climbing. She hit the ground when her belay failed. She sustained serious multiple injuries. She was treated by team members and then flown to hospital

A woman suffered chest pains while walking. The team responded along with NWAS paramedics and she was treated and evacuated

A young male paraglider crashed sustaining serious spinal injuries. He was stabilised and evacuated to hospital by air ambulance

A woman was reported collapsed, possible cardiac arrest above Waterhead. The team attended along with air ambulance and the woman was evacuated to hospital

A climber suffered serious multiple injuries when involved in a rockfall on Raven Crag, Great Langdale. He was rescued and evacuated to hospital with help from North West Air Ambulance, Coastguard R936 and Kendal MRT

We were requested to assist Kendal MRT with the evacuation of a casualty from Kentmere horshoe.

A repeat of the previous night’s incident

Flashing lights were reported on the hill. After some discussion and investigation it was concluded that they were from participants in a night running event

We were called to assist an woman who was reported as being in and out of consciousness near the summit of Orrest Head. We responded but were stood down whil eon route when the incident was resolved via other means

A woman tumbled backwards while crossing a stream and hit her head. She suffered cuts and impaired consciousness at that point. The team was mobilised along with a Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick. After assessment by a team doctor it was established that she would be able to walk a down with assistance and the helicopter was stood down

A female tripped after getting stuck in muddy ground and sustained a suspected ankle fracture. She was treated by the team and evacuated by stretcher

A couple got into difficulty at the top of Raven Crag. While the team were assembling they were helped of by unknown persons, for which we’re very grateful. We were able to stand down

A young male was reported as ill and vomiting on Shelter Crags. With both ourselves and Kendal MRT already engaged with the previous two incidents, with concern fo the condition of the male, a Coastguard helicopter was requested to assist. With help from a couple of team members, helicpter was able to locate the make and evacuate him

Two people became benighted on Low Pike. They were located and escorted off

A woman slipped while descending and sustained facial and suspected neck injuries. She was treated and stabilised by the team and evacuated by stretcher

A solo male scrambler was reported overdue from the previous day. Information pointed towards Pike O’Stickle 
Likely areas were searched initially with binoculars and a drone before a Coastguard helicopter arrived and was able to locate man’s body in a gully high on the side of the crag. Team. Members were airlifted to the site and along with the winchman, were able to recover him to the valley, from where he was transported to Ambleside 

A women suffered an ankle injury when she slipped. She was treated and evacuated by stretcher

A man got into difficulty when an old leg injury flared up and was unable to continue. He was treated and evacuated by team members 

Team leaders were contacted by Keswick MRT with a request to provide assistance at first light on 4th March to continue a search for a missing male. Available team members were identified but ultimately not required when the missing male was located late on 

We received a call to an elderly female who had suffered some sort of partial collapse.
We mobilised to attend but were stood down en-route when we were notified that family members had managed to get her to a car

A woman sustained an ankle injury when he slipped. He was treated and evacuated to an ambulance

A couple became separated on the descent from Stickle Tarn. One raised concern for the other… the other was located via SARLOC… in Chapel Stile. They were reunited on the B5343

We were alerted to a solo male who was struggling on an ambitious route from Windermere railway station to Patterdale via Helvellyn. Having become exhausted he was unable to continue and was getting very cold. Investigation located him within Patterdale team area, so they were alerted, located him and escorted him down

A woman sustained a knee injury while descending from Crinkle Crags. They were making slow progress so called for help. The team attended and she was stretchered off

A woman started feeling unwell while walking. We assisted with getting her to an ambulance for onward transport to hospital

We were called to assist NWAS with a male with a leg injury in woodland behind the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. 

A small group became lost on Calf Crag. Unconvinced that telephone guidance would assist them, a small group of team members went up to retrieve them

Two people got in to difficulty in icy conditions. They phoned for help. A team member was able give them encouragement and guidance and they were able to reach safety
 

We received reports of a collapsed male with CPR in progress. With air ambulance also attending CPR was continued until the man was sadly declared to have died. His body was recovered from the fell and conveyed to Ambleside 

Concern was raised for two males reported overdue. Investigations eventually identified two males who had been delayed but were OK

We received a call from the iPone emergency call centre, and as is often the case, we received very limited information, consisting of a vague location and a report of a ‘traumatic injury’
The team attended and headed off to Mickleden, to be informed that the casualty had made his own way out and was being taken to hospital by a partner.
The team stood down and returned to base

A young woman sustained a suspected lower leg fracture when she slipped. She was treated and evacuated by the team

Two adventurous young men were caught out by winter conditions and became unable to continue. They took shelter at Esk Hause. They were located here by a small group of team members and escorted from the fell

A woman in a party of two suffered a suspected sprained ankle which led them to make very slow progress. They called for help and we were able to meet them and drive them the final kilometre or so of the hill

Team members returning from the previous incident encountered a woman who had slipped on ice and sustained a suspected ankle fracture. We assisted her with treatment and evacuation to her vehicle for transport to hospital

A male sustained a nasty ankle fracture when he slipped on an icy path. He was treated by the team and evacuated to an air ambulance for transport to hospital
With many of our team away training in Scotland, we were particularly grateful for Kendal MRT assistance 

A group of three women became separated when they encountered deep snow. One of them ultimately made it back to the valley bottom alone and was located there. The other two were located and extracted via Coastguard Helicopter from Caernarfon and transported to Ambleside where they were reunited with their third party member and rewarmed and checked by paramedics before heading home

We were alerted by Wasdale MRT about concern for an overdue male. He turned up safe while investigations were being carried out

Flashing lights were reported by campsite staff (something they’re familiar with, but these gave them cause for concern) 
 
Investigation revealed a photographer on the crag unaware of the alarm his actions were causing. False alarm with good intent

A fellrunner slipped on snow-covered ground sustaining a fracture/dislocation of the ankle. He was treated by the team and evacuated to a waiting NWAS ambulance 

An 11-year-old female suffered a lower leg injury. She was treated and evacuated in very icy conditions

We were requested assist with an unconscious casualty in Stock Ghyll. While the team were assembling we were notified that NWAS had extracted the casualty and were no longer required

We were requested to assist a woman with family members who had got stranded on Red Bank due ice. The team were busy with the previous incident so while they waited they were assisted by passersby and we were no longer required

A male sustained a nasty cut to his leg. He was treated and evacuated to their own transport for travel to hospital

Two adventurous wild-campers got into difficulty in strong winds and heavy rain, one reporting a leg injury and chest pains. The team attended in challenging conditions and evacuated the two men

We were called to recover the body of a male from White Ghyll, Langdale
 

We assisted Patterdale MRT and others in an extensive search for an overdue mountain biker. A location of interest was identified, but severe weather conditions postponed the operation until next day

A male suffered injuries in a fall on Gibson Knott and we having trouble finding his way off. He was eventually located lower down and assisted the rest of the way

We assisted a woman with an upper arm injury from The Band

A male was reported unconscious at Grisedale Hause. CPR was unsuccessful  and he was sadly declared deceased. He was recovered to Keswick MRT base by a Coastguard helicopter. We were assisted by Coniston and Keswick MRTs

The team were called to assist a male photographer who had slipped and sustained an ankle fracture

Reports of shouts for help were received. Investigation found nothing 

One a group of three young males was reported as feeling dizzy, unwell and unable to continue their descent from Dove Crag. The group were encouraged to continue to descend, it being easier to keep warm while moving than stationary. We met them around High Pike and assisted them the remainder of the way. We were assisted by Kendal MRT

We were forwarded an iPhone emergency centre activation with no information other than a location. We felt a need to investigate, so a small group was dispatched to Angle Tarn while attempts to make contact continued. Subsequently we were able to make phone contact to establish that the problem (unspecified) that had caused the activation had been resolved and we were no longer needed. The team returned to base

A woman slipped and injured her ankle. She was treated by team members and vacated by air ambulance

In a very similar location to the previous incident a man slipped and sustained a suspected fractured ankle. Patterdale MRT were called and we went to assist with the descent to Scandale

On a second attempt to locate and climb Scafell,  two men became benighted on Long Top, Crinkle Crags… no torches and Google maps… they were located via SARLOC and assisted back to their car parked at Three Shires Stone… it’s OK Wasdale MRT, you can thank us later

We assisted Keswick MRT in locating and recovering a woman who became lost and stuck in the Steel Fell area

Assisted NWAS with recovery of a patient from the bottom of their (steep) garden

Team members assisted Penrith MRT with a search for a male missing overnight in the Cross Fell area. After he was located, they assisted in walking him down to his destination

A couple became benighted while descending Rossett Ghyll. They were located by the team and escorted down

A man was reported overdue from a paragliding trip. His partner had located his vehicle in Grasmere but he was not with it. An initial hasty search was organised, followed by a more prolonged and complex search involving team members, search dogs, and a Coastguard helicopter. This was unsuccessful, and ended around 2am. A further search was planned and implemented at first light, involving team members from multiple other Lake District MRTs, and search dogs from the Lakes, England and Southern Scotland, with the man being found around 10:15am, seriously injured. He was treated by MRT members, then lifted by Coastguard Helicopter to a location from where he could be transferred to an air ambulance and flown to hospital.

A wild-camper had a change of heart when he realised he’d omitted to pack his tent pegs. Deciding to abandon his camping plans, he was unable to find his way off. He was assisted by team members

A competitor in a fell race took a tumble and sustained facial injuries. Initially assisted by race Marshall’s before being met by team members and assisted the rest of the way off

A young DofE participant was reported as unwell and suffering from early stages of hypothermia. He was located and evacuated by team members

 Am male was found having fallen some distance in to Stickle Ghyll, sustaining multiple injuries. He was pulled from the water by passersby and then treated and evacuated with assistance from Kendal MRT, Northwest Air Ambulance and Coastguard Rescue 199

A woman suffered an ankle injury. She was treated and evacuated to the valley, from where she travelled to hospital

A male was reported unwell, shaking and unable to continue on the path to Loughrigg. The team responded and he was evacuated to an ambulance 
We were in the middle of a day hosting a group for Norwegian People’s Aid (Norsk Folkehjelp) who came along to assist… it’s rare to have such a well attended rescue!

The team formed part of a multi-agency response to a report of a 6 and 8 year old  child plus two teens having fallen out of a boat on Windermere. The incident was concluded with all recovered successfully 

We were called to assist a male who had taken a tumble at Stock Ghyll. We were stood down while on route after he was assisted down by bystanders

We assisted NWAS with an incident with a casualty with a suspected ankle fracture

A woman was reported as struggling with a knee injury in Mickelden. An informant ran on to the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel to ring for assistance. The team responded but the woman continued to walk out and made it without our help. We stood down

A man became cragfast while scrambling on Pike O’Stickle. He managed to make himself safe while the team assembled. We were helpfully uplifted by Rescue 199 and set up a rope system to rescue the man

Two people were unable to find their way off Crinkle Crags and they were not going to get off before dark, so with no map, compass or torch it was decided they needed retrieving. 
 
A small group went up, located them and brought them down

A male suffered a dislocated shoulder while ascending Jack’s Rake. The shoulder popped back put left our casualty in a lot of pain. They were recovered to the base of the Rake, from where they were assisted in walking the rest of the way down. We were assisted by a Coastguard helicopter and Kendal MRT 

A woman in a party of three tripped and sustained a fractured wrist. She was treated and stretchered from the fell

A dog slipped and fell down the waterfall at Stockghyll, landing in a pool at about half way, before climbing on to a ledge in between the two main columns of the fall. 
 
A protracted and technical rescue took please to successfully recover the dog and return to to it’s owner

A male descending from the Fairfield Horseshoe slipped and sustained an ankle injury at Lower Brock Crag. He was treated by team members and evacuated by stretcher.

A man suffered a knee injury. He was treated and evacuated

A woman on a led walk slipped and sustained an ankle fracture. She was treated by the team and evacuated with help from Kendal MRT

A woman ran off from her family after a row. There was subsequent concern for her welfare. A search around th area was organised but was eventually called off when it was established that she’d caught a train from Windermere

A woman slipped and sustained a wrist fracture. She was treated and evacuated with help from Kendal MRT

An Apple emergency alert was received by their call Centre in the USA. It filtered through the system and eventually ended up with us… We investigated and found nothing and were unable to contact the number provided. Eventually a ‘stand down’ filtered through as well… there’s definitely room for improvement with this!

A man was found struggling to descend from Stock Ghyll. He was assisted down and returned to family for debriefing

We attended a male suffering dizziness and stumbling. He was assisted down

The team were called to an incident on Windermere. There was a multi-agency response 

A walker took a fall sustaining head, back and hand injuries
He was treated and airlifted to the valley floor for transfer to ambulance

A climber fell from the Langdale Boulders sustaining a fractured ankle. The team attended, treated him and stretchered him to an ambulance

Team members assisted Coniston MRT with a search for a missing child

A woman returning from a swimming trip slipped and sustained injuries to her ankles and hip. She was treated and evacuated 

We were requested to search for a despondent male reported in Langdale. A search was organised and he was located by members of RAF Lemming MRT near Stickler Tarn in the early hours. We were assisted by Police, Keswick and RAF Leeming MRTs, and dears has dogs

A competitor in a race sustained an ankle injury. He was treated and evacuated

A woman complained of dizziness shortness of breath while climbing Stickle Tarn. The team attended and recovered her to the valley

A man was reported as concussed at the end of Mickleden. We responded and located the man at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, having managed to make his own way that far

We received a request to assist NWAS and police to locate and evacuate a reported 17-year-old woman who had given birth and with baby in difficulty. Nothing was found after extensive searching. Inquiries continue

Three occupants of a car managed to take a wrong turn while trying to locate Kirkstone Pass and got stuck on Dubbs Road instead. They were recovered.

A second incident was reported on Esk Pike with another DofE participant succumbing to hypothermia. We were assisted on this rescue by a Coastguard helicopter 

A DofE participant suffered a suspected ankle injury. He was treated and evacuated with assistance from Kendal and Duddon & Furness MRTs. This help was essential as wee were also dealing with another incident that commenced 10 minutes later 

A broken, dropped phone call suggested a casualty on Side Pike. We were able to get a location from the 999 call.  We responded and located a woman with a knee injury. She was assisted from the hill and made her own way to hospital

A young male jumped into the pool at Buckstone’s Jump and dislocated his shoulder. H was treated by the team and air ambulance paramedics and evacuated

Two people were unable to continue due to fatigue. They were recovered to their vehicle in Grasmere

A woman slipped and sustained a fracture/dislocation to her ankle. It was partially reduced on the hill, then after being evacuated to the valley floor, was fully reduced by air ambulance paramedics with the help of additional medication.

A woman slipped on wet grass and suffered a fracture/dislocation ankle injury. She was treated with pain relief and a splint and evacuated 

A young boy walking with his dad and younger sibling when he fell and hurt his leg. The team responded, treated and evacuated the boy. Assisted by Kendal MRT

Som team members were on a joint training venture with other Lakes teams in the Glencoe area. During this time the bodies of a missingfather and son were located by Glencoe MRT. Four of our team assisted, along with other agencies in their recovery

Team members assisted on day 2 of a large scale search for a despondent female in the Keswick area. Thankfully she was located around mid-morning 

Two figured were spotted high on Loft/Raven Crag and reported as cragfast. A team members travelled hastily to try and get sight before it went dark, but could see nothing. After conversation with various witnesses it was decided to take no further action. One possibility is two climbers topping out, combines with a farmer gathering sheep, combined to give a confusing position… false alarm with good intent

Concerns were raised when a dog was located running free at School Knott. The team were asked to search for the man who hadn’t been heard from since around midday. A number of lines of enquiry were followed before it was identified that th missing was was the same person who had been airlifted unconscious by air ambulance around lunchtime, having been trampled by cows

A man took a tumble and sustained head, neck and back injuries. He was assisted by passersby initially then treated by the team and evacuated via air ambulance

A man fell while walking and sustained a head injury. He tried to make his own way down, but eventually had to call for help when he became disorientated and dehydrated. He was treated and evacuated 

A woman in a walking group felt unable to continue, so the group leader called for help. This was being organised when we were notified that she’d rallied and was able to walk down with assistance, so we stood down. We monitored their descent electronically to confirm they got down

A male participant in an organised event suffered from heat exhaustion while competing, resulting in collapse
He was treated by team members and evacuated to an ambulance

Team members assisted in a large scale search for a missing male. Sadly he was located deceased in Skew Ghyll

A man reported himself lost and disorientated in the region of Crinkle Crags. A search was organised and team members were deployed when he made contact with other people who were confident that they could assist him. They guided him to Three Tarns and pointed him downhill. The team stood down

A woman suffered an ankle fracture when have tripped on rough ground
She was treated by the team and evacuated 

A climber pulled off a large piece of rock, which hit his leg on its way to the ground. He received a serious open fracture to his lower leg. He was treated by the team and then evacuated by Coastguard helicopter

A broken phone call suggested that a couple where possibly lost of Scafell, having become separated. Investigation to locate a parked car proved fruitless, and ultimately the couple reunited, so we were no longer needed

A woman took a tumble and sustained a fractured neck of femur. She was stabilised and evacuated to hospital

A woman was gored by cows as she passed through a filed with her family. She suffered nasty injuries to her head and legs. She was treated and evacuated by air ambulance

A male sustained a knee injury in a fall. He was treated and evacuated in a lengthy operation, with help from Kendal MRT

A mountain leader instructor had the misfortune to suffer an ankle fracture when she slipped. She was treated by the team and evacuated 

A climber took a lead fall, ripping out gear and hitting the ground, sustains injuries to both ankles and the lumber area. He was treated and evacuated to an air ambulance for transport to Preston hospital

A woman fell and suffered a facial injury and dizziness. She was treated by team members and evacuated

A male was reported as suffering a head injury in a tent in Mickleden. Initially the fire service was called (it’s a long story!) then requested the team’s assistance. The man was recovered by stretcher then handed over to the ambulance service

A male slipped and sustained a fracture/dislocation of the ankle. He was treated and then evacuated by air ambulance 

A woman slipped and sustained a lower leg fracture. She was treated with a splint and pain relief and evacuated.

A walker came across a body while ascending. The team attended and recovered the man’s body

A young man slipped and suffered a serious, deep cut to his knee. Working jointly with Keswick MRT, he was treated and evcuated by air ambulance 

A man was reported unconscious near Rydal Cave. By the time we had arrived he had regained consciousness. He was extracted to safety

A woman slipped and sustained an ankle injury. She initially attempted to walk off but it proved too painful. She was treated and evacuated by the team

A man slipped and sustained a suspected lower leg fracture. He was treated by team members and evacuated with help from Kendal MRT

A man suffered a suspected double fracture to his ankle. He was evacuated by stretcher and taken to hospital

A woman slipped and suffered an ankle injury. 

A couple were unable to continue when they were overcome by snow and cold. They were located and assisted from the hill in very difficult conditions, during which a helicopter attempted to assist but was unable due to severe weather. Team members endured strong winds and heavy, deep snow. If we had not been able to locate them and get them down, it's fair to say the outcome could have been significantly different

We were called to assist multiple Lakes teams to search for a male overdue from a walk from Seathwaite to Scafell. Team members were tasked to search the Rosset Ghyll and Esk Hause region. He was ultimately located in Piers Ghyll, with serious injuries

A young woman was reported missing with her last known location being reported as Pavey Ark on the 26th. A search was delayed until morning due to the time that had already elapsed, and the dangerous nature of the ground and poor weather. Sadly, a hasty team located the young woman's body around 9 am 
She was recovered to Ambleside 
Our deepest sympathies go to the young woman's family and friends

In another uncharacteristic pre-lunch call Keswick MRT asked us to attend an incident just across the border between us. They were already committed to an incident on Helvellyn White Side (14) - Keswick Mountain Rescue (keswickmrt.org.uk)
A woman sustained a fractured ankle when she slipped in Wythburn
She was given pain relief and evacuated by stretcher

A young woman phoned for help when overwhelmed by weather at Esk Hause. Very poor phone signal meant information was scant so we set off equipped for most eventualities. She was located uninjured at the bottom of Rossett Ghyll having been assisted down by two other people

Two people requested help when they lost the path above Grasmere. They were assisted in finding their way

A woman slipped and suffered a wrist fracture. She continued valiantly on before being assisted the rest of the way by the team

A male collapsed, initially unconscious. The team was called and evacuated the man to handover to an ambulance

Pub staff noticed flashing lights on White Ghyll crag and raised concern with the team. Team members investigated and found nobody in difficulty. False alarm with good intent

Questionable decision making led to a couple going on to the high fells despite warnings of the approaching storm Isha. Forced to abandon a heavy rucsack they found themselves unable to continue and called for help. With considerable difficulty they were recovered in a joint effort by LAMRT, Patterdale, and RAF Leeming and Valley MRTs. A Coastguard helicopter also attempted access but was unable due to extreme weather conditions

We were requested to assist in getting a carer to their client in an isolated location when snow and ice created very difficult road conditions away from main roads

A woman reported double ankle injuries in a slip. She tried to continue to move but was unable. The team was called, with Kendal MRT assisting. The woman was winched in to Rescue 199 Coastguard helicopter and her husband and dog returned to the valley in the company of team members

An apparent distress signal was sighted in the area of Side Pike. Team members met the informant and took a look. Nothing was seen and it was agreed any urgent situation had passed and this was a false alarm with good intent

Two men requested help when they became stuck in the dark. They were located and recovered

Team members travelled to the Cross Fell area to assist with a large scale search that was taking place for an overdue fellrunner. Sadly, the male was located, sadly deceased around midday

A fellrunner suffered a serious and nasty knee injury when he slipped . 
 
He was treated by team members and was evacuated by air ambulance

A couple became benighted when they were unable to find their way down from Dow Bank, Langdale. They were located via SARLOC and recovered by the team

A male sustained a dislocated knee when he fell off a stile. 

Two people became benighted and overcome by the weather when they attempted to camp at Red Screes. They were recovered by the team

Welfare checks on people stranded vehicles
Transport of urgent medication
