We had just started when we were alerted to a second rescue in Langdale. We requested the assistance of the Great North Air Ambulance with our first casualty to allow us to attend to the second. They came and evacuated the woman to Furnace General Hospital. Attempts by her partner to convince her that the helicopter ride was a birthday treat seemed doomed to failure.
Left: The poor woman went head first through here!

19th February at 19.06 27.5 A group of 5 climbers from Birmingham University became cragfast on rough ground at the top Middlefell Buttress. Four where recovered from the top and one was assisted from the descent gulley. One of the group seemed to think he was in Scotland! While the team was on scene a team member who is also a First Responder was alerted to a man who had suffered a suspected cardiac arrest in a nearby hotel dining room. A number of team members not committed to the crag where able to attend and carry out CPR until the First Responders and Paramedics arrived. Unfortunately the man died.
16. Fellwalking

An RAF helicopter was called to assist and arrived just ahead of the first team members. The man was loaded into the helicopter, along with other group members, and flown to Carlisle. Unfortunately the man was confirmed dead on arrival at hospital
17. Fellwalking

18. Fellwalking
Raven Crag
Gt Langdale
2nd March at 22.37 19.5 Two men walking the Cumbria Way became benighted as a result of a spectacular navigation error. The Cumbria Way follows the valley bottom in Mickleden, and the weather was as good as it gets(fresh snow, cold with clear blue skies), so some considerable effort must have gone into going so far off route. They were located by taking bearings from their camera flash being discharged from the opposite side of the valley, and then guiding team members to them. They were escorted from the crag, and returned to their B&B.
19. Fellwalking

24. Fellwalking
Red Screes
Kirkstone
17th March at 16.30 88 A 45-year-old woman slipped and fell 100 metres on hard neve. Quite what her and her partner were doing at 600 metres on solid snow in the just about the most inappropriate footwear we've encountered is anybody's guess. The footwear shows the tell-tale of LAMRT modifications. She had lost consciousness briefly and sustained a suspected fractured femur, head, chest and rib injuries. She was treated by team members and evacuated to hospital by RAF helicopter.
25. Scrambling
Pike O'stickle
Gt Langdale
18th March at 13.52 19.5 A 21-year-old man fell while scrambling. He fell on to the snow and slid over 200 metres. He was assisted initially by witnesses, and then handed over to the team for treatment and onward transport to hospital.

The team was mobilised and found her being assisted down by other walkers in very slippery conditions. She had had a sling put on, and we arranged an air ambulance to evacuate her. The team then assisted the remains of the party off the fell.
28. Fellwalking
Pike O'Stickle
Gt Langdale
22nd March at 16.38 7 We received a report that a man had sustained a shoulder injury near the summit of Pike O'Stickle. The team was dispatched to deal with it, with assistance from Great North air ambulance. We arrived in the valley bottom and were about to set off when an RAF Seaking appeared, as if by magic (do you remember Mr. Benn. He became a great many things, but never a helicopter, so no explanation there!) They winched up the injured man, plus a couple of others, dropping one off in the valley bottom with us, and taking the injured person off to Carlisle hospital. This left one other person to make his way down from the casualty site with a dog that couldn't be persuaded that a ride in a helicopter was a good idea. Team members walked up to meet them, then they were transported to their car, so they could catch up with their friends in Carlisle. It turned out that the Seaking was from Devon?! Bit of a south-westerly blowing then? After a quiet January, our current busy run seems to be continuing.
29. Fellwalking
Pine Riggs
Ambleside
28th March at 13.33 30 A 56-year-old man sustained an ankle injury when he slipped on very wet ground. We found him struggling down the path, so we administered a bit of TLC, then evacuated him back to Ambleside. He was transferred to an ambulance for onward transport to hospital.
30. Fellwalking
Scandale Tarn
Ambleside
1st April at 4.00 29 A couple in their 30's camped near Scandale Tarn, in what appeared to be an idyllic sheltered spot. Until it rained! Then tent was then swamped by an 18" deep pool that formed around them. They were woken by the waterbed effect associated with air mattresses floating. They abandoned their tent and took to higher ground, quickly becoming very cold. The team was called and they were escorted back to valley level. Their kit was recovered, and all were reunited in Ambleside.
31. Fellwalking
Wansfell
Ambleside
1st April at 11.56 10 A woman sustained a wrist injury when she slipped near the summit of Wansfell.
32. Fellwalking
Crinkle Crags
Gt Langdale
1st April at 17.48 32.5 A group of three were lost on Crinkle Crags. They phoned for help. We tried to talk them down but eventually gave up and went and got them. A team of 3 plus Search Dog Yana found the party. They were on Gunson Knott. They were escorted to Three Tarns and down The Band where they were met by other team members ascending with spare torches and flasks of hot drinks. Because of the very slow progress, and very poor weather conditions Kendal MRT assisted with more hot drinks and food. They reached the valley bottom about 2am. This was late finish to a day that started very early!! Hopefully it doesn't turn out to be an early start for another day!
33. Fellwalking

Gt Langdale
4th April at 13.58 36 A 75-year-local man slipped while walking near Tarn Crag. The team was called and the man was treated and evacuated from the fell.
34. Fellwalking
Angle Tarn
Gt Langdale
6th April at 15.25 73.5 A group of ten people from Thailand got in to difficulties when they tried to walk from Langdale to Borrowdale. They became very cold and wet during heavy snow fall in the Angle Tarn area. Eight of them were helped to safety by passing walkers, and two of the more seriously affected were given shelter in a tent put up by a school party. They had become seriously hypothermic. The shelter provided by the school probably saved their lives, and their actions are to be commended. So to are the actions of the people who assisted the other eight. The team were called to assist the two in the tent, and we requested the assistance of a search and rescue helicopter from the RAF, and help from Kendal MRT. The two were treated by team members then all were evacuated from the hill by helicopter. The group were inadequately equipped and had little by way of appropriate clothing or footwear. Without the sound thinking of passersby and the assistance of the helicopter, the outcome would have undoubtedly been much worse.

He phoned two friends for help initially and they took a torch, but were unable to located him. We were then called, and located the man after a brief search. He was unharmed.
41. Fellwalking
Angle Tarn area
Gt Langdale
21st April at 20.12 14 Two boys, aged 14 and 16 became separated from their parents when their dog ran away near Angle Tarn. They chased after it. It came back of it's own accord, but the boys didn't. Their parents searched for them for about 4 hours, before coming down to the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and raising the alarm. A search was quickly organised, with assistance from Keswick and Wasdale MRTs. While this was happening we received a message from the boys saying that they had found their way down to Stonethwaite in Borrowdale. A Keswick team member went to collect them, and one of vehicles was dispatched to Keswick to meet them. The family were reunited about 10.30pm.

Unfortunately a team member was injured while making his way up to the casualty site when he took a small fall.
47. Rescue team member
Crinkle Ghyll, Oxendale
Gt Langdale
21st May at 18.00 A team member fell in the ghyll, while ascending to assist on this rescue, sustaining chest injuries. A group of team members went to his aid while the remainder continued with the evacuation of the previous casualty. After some spectacular flying the helicopter managed to reach both sites and evacuated both injured parties. Kendal MRT had been called to assist, given the weather and doubts that the helicopter would be able to gain access, but in the end weren't required. Team members will be issued with snorkels if these weather conditions persist. It was very very wet.
48. Fellwalking

Ambleside
21st May at 22.30 251 A man was reported as not having returned from a walk around the Fairfield Horseshoe. A search was organised with assistance from Kendal and Patterdale MRT's and two SARDA dogs. The search continued until about 5am, limited by the poor weather.

The initial search was delayed to allow time for the man to make his own way down, but when he hadn't returned by 9am we began to organise a search. He turned up about 9.45am, unhurt, but unable to account for his movements. It's possible alcohol consumption steered events in this case.

He was lucky. He lost his glasses and rucsac (which was later recovered), but not his mobile phone, with which he was able to call for help. He is fully aware of how lucky he is! He was roped back up the crag and walked off.

57. Mountain Marathon
Mart Crag Moor
Gt Langdale
2nd July at 11.35 30 Another mountain marathon competitor sustained a leg injury that meant she was unable to bear any weight on it. The team went to assist. A search and rescue helicopter offered to help, and airlifted team members to a position close to the injured woman, and then airlifted all of us back down again. It turned out that the woman had been injured the previous day. Messages left with other passing competitors didn't make it through to the police. We don't know why. They subsequently spent the night out on the hill. Eventually her running partner had got sick of waiting and had descended to raise the alarm himself. We were on our way home when we were told of another incident, back in the same area. We turned round to attend, but only got to the end of Mickleden before checks revealed that finally a message had got through about our earlier casualty, and we had already completed the job!

Gt Langdale
3rd August at 17.22 63 Three women from Surrey, walking the Cumbria Way, became lost near the summit of Stake Pass. Although the forecast had predicted rain and wind, they were only wearing shorts and lightweight waterproof jackets, and quickly became cold and distressed. They phoned the Police, claiming to be near Pike O'Stickle. We were unable to re contact them, so a search was organised. They were located at 8p.m. after a bit of detective work. They were on Black Crags. It then transpired that they were carrying camping kit, but it hadn't occurred to them to put on extra clothes, erect their tent, or make use of their sleeping bags. They had had been using a 'strip map', a map that shows the route of the Cumbria Way, but doesn't have any information for more than a few hundred metres each side. Fine until you stray of the map! They were escorted to the valley bottom. Keswick MRT had been called to assist, but were stood down when the three were located.

A number of other parties were also given route finding advise on our descent since weather conditions were making accurate navigation difficult.

Initial reports suggested he had gone in the direction of Pavey Arc, so we started our search there. With help from SARDA we scoured the area, but were unable to locate him. Team members started to return to base having spent a very wet night out! A helicopter was arranged for first light and plans were prepared to scale up the search when his car was spotted driving down the road. He had become disorientated on Crinkle Crags, descended into Eskdale, back-tracked and finally become benighted in Oxendale after he ran out of daylight, having no torch. He bivvied out near the bridge in Oxendale, unable to make any more progress in the dark. At first light he had been able to make his way down to his car. We had spotted him as he made his way to find a phone to report himself safe.

Limefitt Park
Windermere
28th August at 17.00 8 An autistic 8-year-boy went missing at Limefitt Holiday Park. Because of the terrain around that area, which includes fast moving water, disused quarries, mine shafts and steep crags we mobilised quickly to go and look for him. Fortunately he turned up quickly, as the team was en-route. We all returned home.

30th August at 18.59 A man became lost in the Crinkle Crag area having wandered off the back side and become disorientated. He didn't have a compass and although he could give us a good description of his surroundings he couldn't give us a bearing or aspect, so it didn't narrow it down much. A search was organised with help from Wasdale MRT. He was located near Lingcove Beck by Wasdale members, escorted back to Brotherilkeld and returned to Langdale.

16th September at 16.35 49 A 51-year-old woman sustained a suspected ankle fracture near the summit of Pavey Arc. The team was called and treated the injuries. She was evacuated via Bright Beck with assistance from Kendal MRT. All done and dusted in three and a half hours and only cold dinner to contend with when we got back. I'm not sure what MRT members did before microwaves and take-aways were invented! Actually, I don't think mountain rescue was invented before that.

23rd September at 19.41 6 A woman phoned for help after being unable to find her way off Loughrigg. She had become cragfast in failing light. She described herself as having climbed walls and fences and being quite close to the road. It took us a while to get to her, having become trapped in what amounted to somebody's very large, very overgrown back garden. Plenty of nettle stings and bramble scratches all round!

Gt Langdale
30th September at 15.07 56 A woman, walking with a small group, slipped and sustained a suspected fractured ankle near the summit of Pavey Ark. The informant was a member of Kendal MRT, who was walking in the area. We were unable to re-contact him because of poor mobile phone coverage. Because of this, it was only when we arrived on scene that we discovered that the woman had a pre-existing spinal problem. This may have been made worse by her fall, and a the very least would have made a two hour stretcher evacuation very uncomfortable. We requested a helicopter to speed her evacuation. A Royal Navy helicopter was working in the area, and came to evacuate the woman to West Cumbria hospital. We were assisted by Kendal MRT, who had been called in anticipation of a long stretcher carry, and two members of Patterdale MRT. The woman's companion was then escorted safely to the valley bottom. This took while, but what's the rush! Nice enough evening for a walk, and we got down before it went dark.
A casualty laughs in the face of adversity. Or was it hysteria when she realised what was going to happen next?

3rd October at 20.55 10 A man, who had been delayed by reoccurrence of a previous knee injury, was benighted when his torch battery went flat. He called for help by mobile phone. We located him fairly quickly and escorted him down. On being found and being given a torch he said he didn't need one, because he could see fairly well in the dark. The question of why he was still there was thought, but never voiced.

29th October at 18.30 27.5 Two climbers suffered a momentary lack of reason when they decided to set off to White Ghyll to do some climbing at 3.30pm without a torch! Inevitably they became stuck soon after the sun set! We located them by their shouts and the dim glow of their mobile phone. They were escorted off. For goodness sake, a torch is a such a simple bit of kit, very reliable and long lasting, especially modern LED lamps. They don't cost much and are very effective. There are very few circumstances when it is excusable to go into the hills without one!! Although there are a great many available you can't go far wrong with Petzl Tikka. If you don't already own one, go and buy one tomorrow and stick it in a rucsac pocket.

13th December at 10pm The team were contacted by the Police about three men who had been reported overdue at their Ambleside gueasthouse. Their car had been traced at Old Dungeon Ghyll car park and they had left information saying that they were going up Scafell Pike. They hadn't returned. The Police managed to track down the wife of one of the men, who said that her husband was diabetic, and had left an answering machine message at 20.20 stating that they had been forced to take shelter on their way back from Scafell and were 'freezing', but would make their way down in the morning. The woman was, however, very concerned about her husbands welfare with respect to his diabetes. After consultation with the team's GP it was decided that we should go and look for them. (I'll pause briefly here, while you go and get a cup of tea, because this story goes on while). We had tried the men's mobile numbers repeatedly up to this point, but only got answering machines. Keswick and Wasdale MRTs and SARDA were requested to assist, because we didn't know the men's position at this point. However, as we were getting things organised we receive a phone call from one of the men. They had become very cold and had decided to try and find their way down. We agreed to go and meet them, having established that they were near Allen Crags and heading for Rossett Ghyll. A small group set off up Rosset Ghyll to rendesvous. The weather was appalling, with very strong gusts of wind and torrential rain. We struggled across swollen becks and eventually got up to Angle Tarn without making contact. We continued up and eventually located them not far from their original position. It was 3.30am by this time. One was suffering from hypothermia and the other two were very cold. They were given hot drinks, food and spare, dry clothes and cajoled into moving. We were making very slow progress, with one of them suffering form very stiff legs, and as we soon discovered, rapidly and dangerously rising blood sugar! Other team members arrived at this point, and we were able to split into two groups, one moving considerably faster than the other. The lead group arrived back at our vehicles in Mickleden at 5.30am, while the others were trying to manage the man's blood sugar and keep him moving much higher up the fell. At this point a decision to call out the full team was made to continue to evacuate them man by stretcher. The man was finally brought back to Ambleside around 9am. It had been a very long and wet night!

31th December at 17.00 9 We were requested by the Police to look for a man reported overdue from a walk in the Easedale, Grasmere area. He had been unable to walk back to Grasmere because the wind was to strong! Severe weather warnings had been issued and the forecast was spot-on.
