It was a lengthy operation, and we were assisted by Patterdale MRT on the carry off, who had come up their side to help. She was evacuated down the Patterdale side of the hill. 26th March at 19.05 30 We were called to assist two women, one with a minor head injury, who were struggling to locate a route off the hill by the light of a mobile phone. The trouble was that they didn't know which hill they had gone up, and subsequently which one they were trying to come down! An extensive search of a variety of places located them on the fellside above Green How caravan park, cragfast on top of a small rock outcrop. We set off to sort her out, but it soon became obvious that they weren't in the same place as we where, and didn't actually know where they were. A grid reference that they gave us put them outside the Lake District! Kendal MRT were called to assist and a 3 hour search located them about 1 km from their estimated position. Once it became obvious that we faced a lengthy evacuation Wasdale MRT also came to help. We eventually reached the road at about 12.30. We were also assisted by 3 SARDA dogs. It transpired that this woman was a cox, so being spirited along by 8 wet men was not a new experience for her!

We managed to get home just a the rain started again, and left Keswick MRT to deal with it. There are about 30 Raven Crags in the Lake District, so I suppose it's inevitable that they get mislaid every now and again.

Mart Crag Moor
Gt Langdale
20th November at 18.22 A group of four descending the Band spotted a light, apparently signalling for help across the valley on Mart Crag Moor. They noted their position and a bearing to the light, convinced themselves that it was a signal for help and not just another person descending after a long day, and phoned for help. They were interviewed by the team, and the position of the light calculated. A group was dispatched, and after a short search found a lone male walker trying to find his way off Mart Crag Moor.

The man had started his walk late, after being forced to change his plans when he had found Wrynose Pass closed because of ice. He was overtaken by darkness, and had been unable to locate a safe descent through the crags that line the north side of Mickleden. He was escorted to the valley floor and returned to his car.

They had a look back up the hill, waited for him in the valley, but he didn't appear, so they called us. A small group searched Mickleden and he was located in a remote part of the valley, having missed the path, and descended steep ground, his torch having failed. He was tired, but unhurt. He was reunited with his friends, back at the Old Dungeon Ghyll car park. While we were their another man identified himself to us. It transpired that he was the casualty from rescue 62. He showed us his scar, and explained that he was recovering, but still had trouble stamping the mud from his boots!

A woman who was part of a large rambling group from Southport slipped on a quiet back road and sustained painful wrist and shoulder injuries. Ambleside
27th December at 12.44 A competitor in the annual Wansfell Race sustained a suspected left ankle fracture while descending. He was treated by team members and transported to hospital. Hopefully they've still got a bit of turkey in canteen. It was icy underfoot and light snow fell on the descent.....That's the boring version! The Red-Top version might read...

FATHER RESCUE SON FROM WINTER ICY HELL!

An Ambleside Mountain Rescuer was involved in the dramatic rescue of his son today. The man was hurtling down an icy mountain while competing in a race, when he slipped and suffered serious injury (he told us it hurt) to his ankle. The man's father, watching the race with the rest of the family, was just wondering where his son was after the leading competitors had passed through, when his pager sounded to alert him to a rescue. "Imagine my surprise when the casualty turn out to be my son" remarked the team member.

The team braved winter conditions (it snowed gently, but was quite chilly!) to rescue the man. He was reunited briefly with his family at the bottom of the hill, before being transported to hospital. The victim's son (6-years-old) was heard to comment that he thought the rescue went well, but that if it had been any higher up, we should have used a helicopter. The team suspects that he is jealous, because his Dad got a sledge ride down the hill, and he didn't.
